5 Interior Design Basics

Whether you're redecorating one room or you're hiring an interior designer from The Black Goose Design to revamp your entire living space, it helps to understand the basics of interior design.

Interior Design is an arrangement of 5 basic elements and composition.

Designer Lisa Dodge chose this piece of art to show FOCAL POINT. This is a point of visual reference that always brings the eye back to "homebase".

SCALE & PORPORTION refers to overall size, while porportion relates the size of parts compared to the whole. Designer Michelle DeHart used the lamp on the left as a "DON'T" and the lamp on the right as a "DO". Keep these two factors in mind when selecting furniture.

Designer Randi Smith chose this area of The Black Goose Design to show HARMONY & UNITY.
Using similar elements is blending while unity refers to the overall sense of belonging.

CONTRAST is also known as texture and pattern. Designer Ellie Smart used opposites side by side. Black/White...Hard/Soft, but says, "use contrast in small doses".

VARIETY is a combination of contrast and harmony & unity. Designer Denise Johnson chose this room at The Black Goose Design to show that not enough contrast makes a room dull while too much makes it confusing. This room is absolutely wonderful!

If looking at these concepts gets your imagination going for a new design project we are offering 1/2 off design services until the end of July....the holidays are just around the corner so don't wait! Call us today. We have a full staff of designers ready to help you with your design needs.
